History of the Townsend Fire Company

The Townsend Fire Company was founded in 1925 by a group of local young men who recognized the urgent need for fire protection after the destructive “Old Hotel” fire. To address this, the community raised funds through carnivals to purchase fire equipment and build a water system. By 1926, the fire company was officially established, and it was incorporated the following year in 1927. The first equipment included a wooden hose cart and buckets. That same year, the town took ownership of the initial equipment and used the funds to purchase a new 1928 American LaFrance pumper and a 500-gallon booster tank. Additionally, the community funded a new 50,000-gallon steel water tank and a deep well to support fire-fighting efforts.

Growth and Expansion

The Townsend Fire Company continued to grow over the years, adapting to the community’s needs. In 1950, the Ladies Auxiliary was formed to help raise funds and support the fire department’s activities. In 1978, the department moved into a newly built firehouse on Route 25, which remains its home today. In 1997, the company expanded its services to include Basic Life Support (BLS), providing emergency medical services to the community. Between 1998 and 2003, the firehouse underwent significant renovations, including the addition of a two-story front section to accommodate the growing department. In 2002, the company added a rescue boat to its fleet, allowing for inland and tidal water rescues. In 2004, the fire company received its first federal grant, which was used to purchase new face pieces for its firefighters.
